"The streets are almost empty during the day and people are making an effort to stay in doors, there is less congestion because the heat is intolerable," he added.

"We’re not used to this dry heat, it’s not as humid as usual which makes it feel more unusual. Driving on the road is dangerous because the sun is so bright that it’s blinding without sunglasses."

Australian tourist Carl Tomich, who is staying near Hanoi's Tay Ho area, said he has been going to a swimming pool for the past three days to escape the heat.

"I try my best not to sit inside all day under the air conditioning because it consumes a lot of energy. But the nights have been really difficult, and I've still had to run the air conditioner all night while I sleep. Normally, a fan would do the job, but not in this heat. Even as an Australian, I find this difficult," he added.
