The weekly cattle market at Melapalayam here witnessed brisk sale of sheep and bulls as traders and Muslims celebrating Bakrid on Thursday purchased the animals in large number.Sheep, based on the weight, were sold for ₹15,000 to ₹45,000, while goats, which are not sacrificed during Bakrid and, hence, were purchased only by meat shop owners, did not fetch such high price.“The sellers bringing the sheep, goat and bulls to the Melapalayam weekly market should buy a token for each animal. We have given over 2,300 tokens by 7.30 a.m. Hence, we can presume that today’s business would have crossed ₹2 crore,” said a Corporation official. Published - May 26, 2026 09:05 pm IST
