May 26 (UPI) -- A man taking video of sharks off the coast of Southern California ended up capturing footage of the inside of a great white shark's mouth when it chomped down on a camera.

Carlos Gauna, aka The Malibu Artist on YouTube, said he was out on his kayak in late April using multiple cameras and a drone to take footage of sharks when one great white approached one of his cameras and tried to take a bite.

"I've been around them a lot," Gauna told KTLA-TV. "They don't normally come at you like that."

Gauna said he had lost contact with his friend operating the drone so he didn't know the shark's position at first.

"Not knowing where the shark is and I look back and the shadow of the shark is right there," he said. "By the time I got comms with him, all I can hear is my buddy yelling, 'He got the camera! He got the camera!'"
