The integrated bus terminus project at Vellalore in Coimbatore, which remained stalled for nearly five years, is set to be revived after the TVK government gave its nod for continuation of the project, according to Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran.Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had announced the construction of the integrated bus terminus on 61.62 acres at Vellalore at an estimated cost of ₹168 crore. The project was to be funded equally by the Coimbatore Corporation and the State government. The Corporation had completed construction of the compound wall, bus bays and shops before the project came to a halt following the change in government. After the DMK assumed office, the project was not continued citing lack of approach roads to the proposed terminus. The infrastructure created at the site has remained unused for the past five years.Following a recent inspection by Minister for Prohibition and Excise K. Vignesh, details regarding the project were sought by the Municipal Administration Department and approval has now been given for continuation of the project, Mr. Prabakaran said.Revised estimateHe said a revised estimate had been prepared factoring in the increase in material costs and minor modifications to the original plan. The detailed project report would be submitted within a week.According to the Commissioner, the Corporation has already spent around ₹54 crore on the project and an additional ₹148 crore may be required for completion.Addressing concerns regarding approach roads, he said the Neelambur bypass road would be widened after being taken over by the State government. The State Highways Department would also be requested to widen the Chettipalayam-Podanur Road.Proposals are being considered to operate the premises as a bus stand-cum-lorry terminal, the Commissioner added.
