Sir, – Since 2020, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have shared power together in government coalitions. A Fine Gael-led government was supported by a “confidence and supply” agreement with Fianna Fáil between 2016 and 2020.In the Dublin Central byelection, the Social Democrats and Green Party attracted 31.4 per cent of the first-preference vote while Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael achieved a 15 per cent share. This expression at the ballot box roundly demonstrates the extent of failure of governments over the last 10 years to deliver for those living in Dublin Central. – Yours, etc,Mark Fox,Dublin 18.Sir, – The lack of any significant interest in the mainstream media in Helen Ogbu’s extraordinary performance at the polls on Friday in the Galway West byelection was in itself extraordinary. This is the most spectacular performance of any immigrant of colour in an Irish election ever. I am not a member of any political party and I don’t live in either of the contested constituencies. If I had, I would probably have voted for her. – Yours, etc,Padraig Yeates, Portmarnock, Dublin 13.Sir, – Let us celebrate that we live in a country where we can have byelections rather than buy elections. – Yours, etc,David Curran,Knocknacarra,Galway.Sir, – Which is it, by election (Citizens Information), bye-election (RTÉ, Electoral Commission) or byelection (The Irish Times)? – Yours, etc,Suzanne Reeves, Balbriggan, Co Dublin.
