Europe is trying to recruit top scientific talent from the US, including scientists seeking a new home amid fears of censorship and federal funding cuts – but it will need to do more.
After US President Donald Trump announced major cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) last year, American scientist Erin Kavanaugh began considering moving back to Germany.
Back then, Kavanaugh was a biomedical researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She had lived in Germany several times before, notably during a Fulbright scholarship, and had met her partner there.
