President Donald Trump reiterated his demand on Monday that Iran hand over its enriched uranium for the purpose of destruction, but he said the uranium could be destroyed in the United States, Iran, or “another acceptable location” deemed fit by the federal government.
“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Iran’s transfer of its nuclear material has been a key demand of the U.S. since the war began nearly three months ago.
The president’s statement shows how the U.S. has grown flexible regarding ways to eliminate Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, which could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
The demand comes amid renewed peace talks that may culminate in an agreement. Over the weekend, Trump indicated the negotiations were progressing well. However, no decision has been reached yet.
