The Irish were 11-0 this season when scoring first. That streak ended Monday.No. 1 Princeton men’s lacrosse trounced No. 2 Notre Dame 16-9 for the NCAA championship Monday in Charlottesville, Va. The title marks Princeton’s first since 2001, when the school won its last of six titles in the previous 10-year span.“It took years in the making,” Princeton coach Matt Madalon said postgame. “It’s now a ‘forever’ team. That’s always the goal.”In what was supposed to be a heavyweight fight between two top-ranked teams, two Tewaaraton Award finalists and two star goalies, the Irish’s competitive hopes were derailed early.Notre Dame went up a quick 3-0 before Princeton answered with three straight scores of its own — two by senior midfielder Chad Palumbo — for a first-quarter tie, seemingly proving the expected parity of the matchup. It went sideways in the second quarter. Princeton continued to control possession and went on an eight-goal run to close the half up 11-3. Palumbo’s four goals in the first half — which tied the Princeton goals record in a national championship game — were more than all of Notre Dame’s, which was held scoreless for the last 25 minutes of the half.
