Care worker Mohit Kaushal can drive around 1000km a week.

Rising fuel prices have hit hard for people who use their own cars for work, including community support workers who say rising costs are cutting into their take-home pay.

It's not unusual for Mohit Kaushal to drive 1000km a week.

He leaves his Pōkeno home at 5.45am and drives an hour or more to central Auckland, where he sees his first client at 7am.

Throughout the day he drives between his clients, who are elderly or disabled, to help with personal care, meals, medication, and household tasks.
