The police have expedited the investigation into the sexual assault-cum-murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Combatore district, aiming to submit the charegsheet in the case within a month.Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R.V. Ramya Bharathi on Monday convened a meeting with Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore Range) P. Saminathan, Coimbatore District (Rural) Superintendent of Police Allatipalli Pavan Kumar Reddy, Additional SP M. Vivekanandan and members of the investigating team.The investigating team comprises Deputy Superintendent of Police Karikal Pari Shankar, two male Inspectors, three women Inspectors and 10-15 Sub-Inspctors. Perur DSP S. Suresh will assist Mr. Shankar. Officers were assigned different tasks to wrap up the investigation at the earliest. The progress will be reviewed on a daily basis, Ms. Bharathi told The Hindu.On the forensic side, the police are waiting for the postmortem report, viscera analysis report among others. A potency test is likely to be conducted for the main accused in the case, K. Karthi, 33.An officer privy to the investigation said Karthi’s accomplice Mohan, 30, misled the police when they questioned him about the girl, who was reported missing on May 21 evening. He allegedly told the police he had seen the girl going with a man on a scooter. However, examination of surveillance cameras by the police proved that Karthi abducted the girl on his motorcycle and Mohan was misleading the investigators. Though he allegedly had knowledge of the crime, he did not disclose it to the police, the officer said.Further role of Mohan in the crime, if any, would be investigated.
