The statue, before repairs. [City of Athens]
Less than a month after a new bronze statue of C.P. Cavafy was installed near the Acropolis vandals have defaced it by breaking off part of the poet’s eyeglasses, the Athens municipality said Monday.
The City of Athens said in a social media post that the statue was repaired on Saturday by the sculptor who made it, Praxitelis Tzanoulinos. The post made no reference to any investigation into the vandal attack.
The life-sized statue of the poet sitting on a chaise longue was installed on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street opposite Hadrian’s Arch at the end of April.
