The police are on the lookout for an unidentified person who cheated a 38-year-old computer dealer in Coimbatore of ₹6.5 lakh, by promising him a bulk order for a defence canteen. The dealer complained to the cybercrime police that an unidentified man contacted him and posed as a procurement representative for the defence canteen in the city in April this year. The impostor placed an order for 30 computers, following which he went to Red Fields to deliver the machines on April 15. When the complainant contacted the impostor, he was told to pay ₹6.50 lakh as Goods and Services Tax in advance and assured of getting a refund after the final payment for the computers. Trusting the stranger, the dealer transferred the amount and got duped of the cash, said the police. Published - May 25, 2026 09:37 pm IST
