Athens performances of The Child, an Iranian play about migration due to have been staged next week, have been canceled due to the standoff between the US and Iran in the Gulf, authorities said Monday.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival said that “the acute geopolitical circumstances … make it impossible for the artists to travel from Iran right now.” The play had been scheduled to be performed on June 1 and 2 at the festival venue on 260, Piraeus Road.
Written by Iranian playwright Naghmeh Samini and directed by Afsaneh Mahian, the play was to have been performed in Farsi with supertitles. It deals with three women from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya – with a newborn baby – on a European coast being interrogated by authorities.
The festival said in a statement that it had done what it could to ensure the performances went ahead.
“We remain in contact with the artists and are looking into every option so that this important group can be seen in the immediate future,” it said.
