Police officer at a crime scene in the Western Cape

It was a tragic end to the weekend for an Elsies River family after their 13-year-old son was killed in what appears to have been a gang-related shooting.

His murder brings the number of people killed across the province at the weekend — in incidents reported on by this publication — to about 15, despite the army’s deployment to gang-infested areas.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the teenager was among three people shot in 18th Street, Leonsdale, Elsies River at about 9.15pm on Sunday.

Twigg said the teen died, while two other men, aged 18 and 31, were wounded and taken to hospital.
