SAPS has arrested senior ballistics expert Captain Laurence Makgotloe on charges of defeating the ends of justice in a case linked to multiple high-profile murder and attempted murder investigations across South Africa.
The case against suspended police captain Laurence Makgotloe has been postponed to next Tuesday for a formal bail application, as the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that firearms linked to the investigation have now been connected to 30 serious and violent crimes, including multiple murders and attempted murders.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the development outside the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where she said Makgotloe had already appeared in court.
The matter was postponed to June 2.
Mathe said Makgotloe, a senior ballistics expert attached to the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory, was arrested on Friday by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team on charges including defeating the ends of justice, being an accessory after the fact, and possession of unlicensed ammunition.
