MANILA, Philippines — Different groups and several House of Representatives lawmakers have urged former senator and newly-appointed Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) head Francis Tolentino to “hit the ground running” in terms of solving problems related to the labor industry.
In a statement on Monday, Kamanggagawa party-list Rep. Eli San Fernando said that the real battle starts with going against the policies of former Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma — which the lawmaker said will be a tall order for Tolentino.
According to San Fernando, it is a relief that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has finally let go of Laguesma, noting that the former cabinet official’s medical leave was only discovered by the House’s ad hoc committee on the Middle East crisis.
“Finally, Pres. Marcos has sacked Secretary Benny, the worst Labor Secretary in the history of our country. He was a ghost secretary whose greatest achievement for workers might have been his resignation. Senator Tolentino will replace a cabinet official who cannot be reached by workers in the middle of one of the biggest global crises,” San Fernando said. in Filipino.
