A new mum is in shock after realising the huge mistake she made with her daughter's name, as although she thought it was adorable, it's got a massive flaw that she didn't spot09:56, 25 May 2026Choosing the perfect baby name isn't something you should rush into. Some parents will have a baby name picked out for months before their child arrives, but for others, narrowing the choice down to just one moniker is difficult. It's a big decision, and it deserves time and thought to be put into it to ensure you make the right choice for your child.‌Ultimately, whichever baby name you choose is entirely up to you, and although others may not like it, it's not their place to tell you that you're making a mistake. Unless, of course, you have managed to pick out the "worst name ever" for your baby, which is what one new mum on social media has seemingly done.‌The mum's cousin shared a post on Reddit in which she asked for advice after declaring that her family member had chosen the "worst name ever" for her baby while trying to do something sweet.‌She revealed her cousin had intended to name her daughter after her grandparents, Harvey and Charlotte, by combining their names into one moniker. The mum kept the name a secret from her family as she wanted the sentimental gesture to be a surprise - but once she revealed the name, she realised the horrible mistake she made. The cousin shared: "So my 20-year-old cousin had a baby girl last month. She named her something so horrific I cannot even call the baby it. She combined two names and came up with... Harlotte. After her grandparents, Harvey and Charlotte. She didn't tell anyone the name idea until after she was named and [the] papers [were] signed."Warning: The below Reddit post contains strong language.‌When the new mum announced the baby's name to her family, her aunt - and the poster's mother - asked her why she had decided to name the baby "w****". It was then that the mum realised that by combining the names, she had effectively named her daughter "harlot", which is a derogatory term for a sex worker. She then "started screaming" and burst into tears as she realised her mistake, as she had no idea about how the name sounded before she shared the news with her family.‌The woman on Reddit added: "This poor child. Harlotte. HARLOTTE. She came out very pink and has a piggy nose, so I'm calling her Piglet for now."Commenters on the post were baffled by the name the mum had come up with, with many of them offering better suggestions for the combination of Harvey and Charlotte. One person said: "They could've kept it super normal and just gone with Charley!"‌While another added: "The cousin is a complete idiot. Have some sense."And a third questioned: "Why do people, who have unlimited access to information at their fingertips, refuse to use it for a simple search before ruining a baby's life?"What are the laws on baby names in the UK?If you're looking to give your child an unusual name, it's worth ensuring it falls within the boundaries of UK naming law.
