LifestyleParentingA mum has sparked a debate after revealing the unique name she has chosen for her son - while she loves it, her parents are desperately trying to convince her to change it06:59, 14 Jul 2026Picking out a baby name isn't always as easy as it sounds - especially when people share opinions without being asked. It happens quite frequently but the whole process of finding a baby name can often take weeks or months for parents.Sadly this was the case for one mum who experienced backlash after carefully selecting the "perfect" name for her little boy – and her own parents didn't approve. In fact, they thought the name was actually inappropriate which prompt the pregnant woman to turn to the internet for advice.Speaking on Reddit, she said: "We have spent a long time (4 months) trying to find a name for our boy that we like. We settled on 'Cecil' after much back and forth because we wanted him to have a name that isn't likely to be shortened or replaced by a nickname, and we really liked how it sounds. For a second name we decided to go for something somewhat out of the ordinary and picked 'Tenebris', a Latin word that sounds interesting and unique."Also, it being a second name means he will always have the choice to use it or not, depending on whether he likes it."She explained she and her partner were really happy with the names, but her parents have been trying hard to change her mind. The mum added: "They have been telling me that both names are bad and inappropriate and saying that Cecil is not a name for a boy and Tenebris should not be allowed because it is not really a name. This has really been putting a lot of stress on me."Reddit Users Compare Dark Fantasy Baby Name To Romantasy CharactersSeeking opinions online, she added: "I would love some opinions on the names. Are they that bad? By now I'm getting a bit insecure about this whole thing."Commenting on the post, one user said: "Some of you need to remember that you are naming a real child, not a dark romantasy character. Cecil is fine, but Tenebris?"Another user added: "I mean, Cecil is a fine, established name. I'm afraid I agree with them on Tenebris."Not only is it not a name, it's the plural dative and ablative form of the Latin word, which is just strange to me."A quick Google search shows it's the name of multiple works of fiction about evil things or characters. Do you really want to give that legacy to your child?"Article continues belowA third user said: "Cecil is fine, but Cecil Tenebris starts to sound like a dark fantasy protagonist. I'd reconsider the second name."The Hidden Translation and Dark Meaning Behind the Name Cecil TenebrisThe name generally means "blind" or "dim-sighted" in Latin, deriving from the ancient Roman family name Caecilius. However in Wales, the name derived from Seisyllt which is thought to stem from the Latin sextus (sixth). When the name is teamed with Tenebris, it's a striking combination of Latin origins, translating roughly to "Blind Darkness" or "Dim-sighted Shadow".Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.Baby NamesParenting
