LAS VEGAS — It came down to the last race of the day, but the Enhanced Games got their world record Sunday night.Greek swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev set a new, unofficial 50-meter freestyle world record of 20.81 seconds, 0.07 seconds faster than the previous mark, at Resorts World and won a $1 million bonus at the inaugural Enhanced Games, the event that allows and supports athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs. In addition to different cocktails of testosterone, anabolic steroids, growth factors, metabolic modulators and Adderall — all banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency — swimmers were also able to use polyurethane “super suits” that were banned in 2010. The suits reduce drag, boost buoyancy and led to a number of records in 2008-09 before World Aquatics, the sport’s international governing body, did away with them.“I had a really good race,” Gkolomeev, 32, said on the Enhanced Games YouTube broadcast. “I had a mistake on the breakout. I got a little bit nervous, but then the rest of the swimming was good, so I got it.”
