As loud as it has ever been at Selhurst Park, “Oli Glasner’s red and blue army,” rang out for one last time.Forget, for a moment, the Arsenal title celebrations, this was Crystal Palace’s moment. Their stadium, their home, everything was to be done on their terms even just for a little while.“Congratulations to Arsenal for winning the league but give us five minutes, will you?” Palace chairman Steve Parish requested of the travelling supporters. They just about obliged. It was a chance for Palace to say thank you, and for Selhurst to say a sort of goodbye to the man who has become the most successful manager in the club’s history. That his name was sung at the conclusion of Parish’s speech was warranted. It was special. He has given them so much. The feeling of disrespect in the winter over his emotional outbursts and what some perceived to be criticism of the supporters has subsided as Palace’s European journey has continued.Yet, just as he himself said, this did not truly feel like goodbye. The post-match awards and celebrations were not full of heart-tugging, emotional speeches — there is one last game to go, even if it is in Leipzig, not in south London — but it was nevertheless a touching moment. Many of the Palace supporters who were at Selhurst will be in Germany for the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday where the true farewell will come, hopefully to bring a third trophy in this most successful period of the club’s history.Parish handed Glasner a small replica FA Cup trophy in recognition for the achievement of lifting the real thing last May and delivering the club’s first major trophy.
Farewell to Oliver Glasner, an adopted south Londoner who changed what Crystal Palace believed is possible
He has brought so much success to Selhurst Park - and there could be still more to come on Wednesday before his exit.
Crystal Palace honored Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park: in two seasons he won the FA Cup and Community Shield and led the club to its first Conference League final. Wednesday's match vs Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig will decide whether he exits with three trophies.
