Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said his government will set up a counter-radicalisation cell to "protect vulnerable youth from extremist influence". He asserted that Assam will "give it back firmly" to anyone trying to mislead the youth of the state."We will not allow any group or individual to mislead our youth and ruin their future by radicalising them. Assam will give it back firmly," Sarma said in a post on X. "A counter radicalisation cell will be established to protect vulnerable youth from extremist influence," the CM said.A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Attempts are being made to radicalise youths, especially in vulnerable areas. In some places, the pretext of eviction drives is being used to radicalise them."Over the last five years, the Assam government has cleared 1.5 lakh bighas of government and forest land from encroachment.The Assam government is likely to table a bill on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Monday in the state assembly. The government has stated that it is working towards the enactment and implementation of the UCC in a manner that fully protects the traditional rights, customary practices, and social institutions of tribal and indigenous communities.
