Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government’s suggestion to the High-powered Demography Mission will be to scrutinise citizenship of all the people staying along the international border.Talking to the media persons, he said, “High-powered Demography Mission may come out with a strict regime in its recommendation. It may be that in its recommendation it may recommend the National Register of Citizens (NRC) every year for people along the border, checking their Citizenship IDs.”He added, “Our suggestion to the High-powered Demography Mission will be to scrutinise citizenship of all the people staying along the international border. There is a need to ascertain how many Hindu people there were during the time of Independence and what is the number now and how many Muslim people there were then and how many there are now.”He added, “We are not talking about foreigners but demography. Demography change is a matter of concern.”Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired) is the Chairman of the Committee. In addition to the Census Commissioner, three distinguished experts — Durga Shankar Mishra (Retired IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retired IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi — are members of the Committee. The Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I), Ministry of Home Affairs, will be the Member Secretary of the Committee. This Committee will submit its report within one year. If necessary, the Ministry of Home Affairs may extend the tenure of the Committee by up to six months.Sarma said, “From August this year a survey will be done to ascertain the profile of street vendors in Guwahati. We will bring out details of those street vendors.”Sarma said Prime minister Narendra Modi has visited Assam 36 times since assuming office, and pointed to a sharp increase in central allocations to the state as evidence of the Centre's commitment to the region.Sarma said central assistance to Assam between 2006 and 2016 stood at approximately Rs 1.7 lakh crore. From 2016 to 2025-26, that number rose to Rs 5.5 lakh crore, more than a threefold increase. "It is almost five times higher. That reflects the level of central support Assam has received. PM Modi never says no to projects for Assam. All we have to do is, get the project prepared and present it to him," he said, adding that the Prime Minister is “always ready to walk the extra mile for Assam”.The Chief Minister said Assam's GDP has grown from Rs 2.27 lakh crore in 2015-16 to approximately Rs 8.7 lakh crore under the current dispensation, and claimed that around 80 lakh people have moved out of poverty into what he described as the neo-middle-class category.Sarma announced a series of infrastructure projects either underway or in the final stages of approval. A Silchar-Siliguri Express Corridor is proposed to be developed in phases. Work from Barapani to Silchar has already begun, with the Barapani-Guwahati stretch to be announced shortly, followed by the extension to Siliguri. A Guwahati-Tinsukia Express Corridor is also being planned. The four-lane project from Baihata Chariali to Mission Chariali is expected to be sanctioned shortly. An elevated corridor connecting Guwahati Airport through the ring road via Jalukbari is also under way.He added a double railway line below the Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the Chicken's Neck, which has been sanctioned to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to the Northeast during emergencies. "If there is any disruption in the Chicken's Neck region, the Northeast should not get disconnected. The government is also discussing the construction of another tunnel for vehicular movement.The Chief Minister also announced plans for a railway line connecting Assam with Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
