The Forest Department here has registered a case against five persons on charges of using a jackal for conducting puja during a Mariamman temple festival at Ammapatti village in Thuraiyur taluk in the district recently and allegedly harassing the animal and displaying it in front of the general public.Acting on information, a team was constituted on the direction of the Conservator of Forests, Tiruchi Circle R. Kanchana to conduct an inquiry into the incident at the village. Based on the inquiry, the Forest Department booked a case on Saturday against five persons under various provisions of The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 since Jackal is protected under Schedule I of the Act, a press release said.
