Marking the 200th birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and reiterating the need to protect government schools, a one-day children’s summer camp was organised at Geekallihundi village in Nanjangud taluk on Sunday. The camp, organised by The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), focused on familiarising children with the lives and struggles of great personalities while promoting value-based education and social awareness.Addressing the gathering, Ranjith Dhoopad, member of the Public Education Protection District Committee, said children could be moulded into responsible and value-oriented individuals by introducing them to the ideals and struggles of social reformers and eminent personalities.Speaking on the life and contributions of Jyotiba Phule, he said the reformer established schools to spread education and challenge the social inequalities that had persisted for centuries. “Education alone can help individuals develop critical thinking and self-confidence,” he said, adding that Phule advocated for universal education that reached every section of society, irrespective of social background. He noted that Phule’s efforts played a key role in expanding educational opportunities for girls and marginalised communities.Expressing concern over the challenges faced by the public education system, speakers at the event urged students and local communities to come forward to safeguard neighbourhood government schools in keeping with Phule’s vision of inclusive and universal education. The camp featured drawing activities, science experiments, demonstrations explaining so-called miracles, games and other interactive sessions for children.AIDSO Mysuru district secretary Nithin and district committee members Hemalatha, Chandrika, and Nandeesh were present.
