Eighty-two people died and two remain missing after a gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province.

The incident involved 247 miners underground; 128 were hospitalised and 35 escaped without injury.

Officials revised the initial death toll of 90 due to chaotic conditions and unclear worker records at the site.

Authorities shut all four mines of Shanxi Tongzhou Coal and Coking Group, detaining executives as an investigation proceeds.
