At least 90 miners died in a gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi’s Qinyuan county, the deadliest incident since 2009.

The mid-sized mine, owned by Shanxi Tongzhou Coal & Coke Group, had 247 underground; executives have been detained as investigations proceed.

Seven combined rescue and medical teams totalling 755 personnel were deployed, with operations ongoing and the cause under investigation.

President Xi Jinping ordered search and rescue, treatment of the injured, and a thorough probe with strict accountability; Premier Li Qiang urged timely, accurate information.
