While many may not know the app, as Apple doesn't automatically install it on iPhones, the company has been running its own sports offering for several years. Apple Sports lists current results from various sports, including widgets and Live Activities. The app, which has been available in Germany since autumn 2025, has now been improved to coincide with the Football World Cup in North America.

Results without News

With the version 4.0 released this week, Apple says users will have "everything" they need for the 2026 World Cup. "When the tournament kicks off in June, you'll be able to see the lineups and formations of each team, follow the matches and results in the tournament schedule, and track events in real-time," the manufacturer writes. However, Apple Sports only lists current news in the form of headlines, if at all – as these come to users via the Apple News app, which is still only available in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.

This is all the more frustrating as Apple Sports 4.0 is now available for download in 170 countries and regions worldwide, with 90 of them being new additions. While users will receive current results, the background information is missing. Apple had previously discontinued a so-called news widget in 2024, which presented users with headlines and links and was also available in Germany. It is unclear whether Apple News will ever reach devices outside the four mentioned countries. The app only appears if the corresponding region has been selected on the iPhone (or iPad and Mac).
