WASHINGTON — A suspect was killed on Saturday after allegedly opening fire near the White House complex, according to the US Secret Service.In a statement, the agency said the shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House grounds.Authorities said the suspect “pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing” in the area.“Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” the statement said.The agency added that one bystander was also struck by gunfire during the incident, though the individual’s condition was not immediately known.No Secret Service officers were injured, according to officials.The Secret Service confirmed that US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting and that “no protectees or operations were impacted.”According to ABC News, Trump was in the Oval Office with aides including Steven Cheung, Natalie Harp and Margo Martin when the shooting occurred.The incident remains under investigation.FBI Director Kash Patel said FBI personnel were assisting the Secret Service at the scene, while the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC also confirmed its involvement in the investigation.Authorities later lifted a temporary lockdown imposed at the White House following the shooting.
