Retired soccer player Marios Oikonomou, who represented several clubs including Athens side AEK, has been admitted to intensive care after a motorbike he was riding collided with a car in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, on Saturday afternoon.
The 34-year-old is reported to be in critical condition at Ioannina University Hospital after being transported by ambulance with serious head injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities said the circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
Oikonomou earned six caps for the Greece national football team between 2016 and 2018 and played for several clubs abroad, including Italy’s Cagliari, Bologna, and Sampdoria, as well as Denmark’s Copenhagen. He began his professional career at hometown side PAS Giannina.
