Labour has been criticised for changes to the Motability scheme, which one user said had given them critical freedom.
Alan Norton, 80, from Tottingham, Bury, contracted polio at the age of three, leaving him with limited use of his limbs and a wheelchair user since his teens.
He drives a specially adapted vehicle which is wheelchair accessible and has handlebars rather than a steering wheel.
He told The i Paper: “I wouldn’t be able to live, I wouldn’t have had a life without Motability. It meant I could get out.
“I was able to decide what I wanted to do with my life. The world was my oyster. It’s freedom – it negates the effects of your disability.”
