Cyprus Finance Minister Makis Keravnos stressed on Friday the need for increased investment in Europe to address mounting economic and geopolitical challenges, while warning against undermining the European Union’s fiscal governance framework.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the informal meeting of the EU economy and finance ministers and central bank governors in Nicosia, Keravnos said discussions would focus on competitiveness, strategic autonomy and the role of investment in strengthening the European economy.

“As you know, the motto of the Cyprus presidency is the EU strategic autonomy. Strategic autonomy goes hand in hand with enhancing competitiveness,” he said.

Keravnos noted that finance ministers discussed ways to increase investments in order to face current challenges, stressing however that this should be done “without undermining the fiscal governance.”
