State media outlets in Iran and Pakistan reported on Friday, May 22, that Field Marshall Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, has left for Tehran. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, citing diplomatic sources in Islamabad, reported that the Pakistani Army Chief “headed to Iran” on Friday.

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) also cited security sources as saying that during the official visit, Asim Munir will hold talks with Iranian officials on “the ongoing Iran-U.S. negotiations, regional peace and stability, and other mutual interests.”

According to IRNA, the visit was initially scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026, but took place after a 24-hour delay.

The Pakistani Army Chief had visited Tehran forty days earlier, where he met “Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf” and members of Iran’s negotiating team involved in the Iran-U.S. talks. Pakistan’s Interior Minister has also traveled to Tehran for the second time in recent weeks, reportedly to discuss the terms of an agreement with Iranian officials.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who traveled to Sweden for the NATO Ministerial Meeting, said Washington is in contact with the Pakistani Army Chief and expects him to arrive in Tehran very soon.
