OTTAWA—The Carney government says it is “reviewing” a decision by Canada’s broadcast regulator that would force streaming giants to triple their contributions to Canadian content, amid fears it could inflame heightened trade tensions with the Trump administration.
Following through on powers given to it by the Trudeau-era Online Streaming Act, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced Thursday that major online streaming providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video with at least $25 million in annual revenues in Canada would have to contribute 15 per cent of that money to the creation of Canadian movies and TV.
