An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 750 cases as the suspected death toll has risen to 177, the World Health Organization announced Friday.

One American who contracted Ebola is receiving treatment in Germany.

FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2026There are 82 confirmed cases of Ebola in addition to seven confirmed deaths in Congo, and there are about 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X.

Ghebreyesus, who noted the outbreak in Congo is “deeply worrisome,” said the situation in Uganda is “stable” with two confirmed cases and one reported death.

WHO is aware of another American who is a “high-risk contact” and has been transferred to the Czech Republic, Ghebreyesus said.
