Charlie is set to play Charles Shelby, the son of Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, in a Peaky Blinders spin off.‌The spin off takes place in the 1950s, 10 years after the events of the recent Netflix film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. It is set to focus on a new generation of the Shelby family as they try to rebuild their lives in Birmingham following the Second World War.‌Heaton plays 32-year-old Charles, who fought in the war and spent much time behind enemy lines. After his experiences, he cuts ties with the Shelby gang. Bell and Heaton will be joined by Lashana Lynch and Jessica Brown Findlay, but their roles have not yet been revealed.Speaking about Heaton joining the show, Netflix said: "In the upcoming series, Charles has severed all ties to the Peaky Blinders gang, his half-brother Duke, and the hedonistic Shelby lifestyle. But can you ever escape your own blood?"Charles was first seen in the franchise as a young child during the initial series run, and was born during his father's marriage to true love, Grace (Annabelle Wallis). The character left the show following Grace's death.‌While the show hasn't yet hit screens, two series have already been commissioned, both of which will contain six hour-long episodes. The series will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Netflix in the rest of the world.It comes four years after the original series ended. Cillian Murphy's drama finished airing on the BBC in 2022. Murphy starred in the show alongside Paul Anderson, who played his brother Arthur, and the late Helen McCrory, who played Tommy Shelby's aunt Polly Gray.‌The show was first broadcast on the BBC in 2013 and has become a worldwide success, picking up a Bafta in 2018 for best drama. It also won an NTA for outstanding drama series that year.Heaton's role in Peaky Blinders comes only shortly after his breakthrough role as Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things came to an end. The final series of the sci-fi fantasy show was released at the end of last year.
