According to the sources, the development has created a significant accountability gap spanning several years, leaving projects worth billions of naira at the local government level without independent physical verification or updated asset records.

Concerns are mounting within Lagos State’s local government accountability system following allegations from sources familiar with the operations of the Office of the Auditor-General for Local Governments (OAGLG) that the state quietly dismantled the Directorate of Project Inspection, which was responsible for statewide physical inspection of projects and verification of public assets across the 57 councils in the state.

According to the sources, the development has created a significant accountability gap spanning several years, leaving projects worth billions of naira at the local government level without independent physical verification or updated asset records.

For more than a decade, the OAGLG reportedly carried out a structured statewide Projects Inspection and Asset Verification exercise, deploying qualified engineers and technical personnel across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State.
