Google $GOOGL -0.32% announced it is expanding its SynthID digital watermarking and content verification tools to Google Search and the Chrome browser, the company said at its annual I/O developer conference. Users will be able to check whether an image, video, or audio file was generated by AI through Search features including Lens, AI Mode, and Circle to Search, as well as through Gemini in Chrome.
SynthID verification is available in Search starting Tuesday. The Chrome rollout is expected over the coming weeks, the company said. A query such as "Is this made with AI?" or "Is this AI generated?" will trigger the verification check.
The announcement builds on an existing capability in the Gemini app, where SynthID verification for image, video, and audio has been used 50 million times globally since its introduction, the company said. Launched three years ago, SynthID works by embedding imperceptible signals directly into AI-generated content. To date, the technology has been applied to over 100 billion images and videos, along with audio totaling 60,000 years in length, according to Google.
Alongside SynthID, Google is also adding verification for C2PA Content Credentials — an industry standard that documents how media was created or modified — to its products. Gemini app users gain access to C2PA verification on Tuesday, while Search and Chrome are expected to follow in the months ahead. Having debuted Content Credentials support in the Pixel 10's camera app, Google is now widening that integration to include video recording on Pixel 8, 9, and 10 devices, a change expected in the coming weeks.
