By now we’ve seen tonnes of stories — oh look, there’s another one — about how the price of jet fuel has led to price escalations and flight cancellations, forcing people to rethink their travel plans. For a while, I was grinning smugly: for more than a decade, my family’s vacations have been road trips. Over the years, we’ve hit both oceans and every one of the great lakes on four wheels. No need to scramble because of airlines!
But then, there’s the cost of gas, which is driving inflation peaks all on its own. A price nearing $2 per litre sees lineups forming at discount stations and reports of gas-and-dash incidents. (Why? Anastasia Blosser has an explainer on the economics of pump pricing today.)
