Ex-Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta
Ex-Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a career spanning two decades across Europe and the international stage.
In an emotional open letter on X on Friday, Azpilicueta reflected on the journey that began in his hometown of Pamplona.
“Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer,” he wrote. “After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.”
The former Spain international admitted the decision was not easy, despite having mentally prepared for it.
