John Dragnis, CEO of Goldenport Holdings, highlighted the flexible and international role of Greek shipping during the “Geopolitics at Sea” panel at Naftemporiki’s 10th Shipping Conference.Dragnis expressed the view that the likelihood of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz evolving into a toll-based transit system has now increased. As he noted, such a development cannot be considered acceptable, as it undermines the principle of freedom of navigation; however, at present there appears to be no easy way to return to the previous status quo.He pointed out that the crisis is affecting not only energy cargoes. Shipments of urea, fertilisers, sulphur, methanol and ammonia are also being disrupted, with the consequences expected to intensify as inventories are depleted.Human capital and internationalizationDragnis also addressed the issue of human capital, stressing that Greek shipping offices must become more international and more open to executives from different markets. As he noted, shipping requires talent, technical expertise, experience and people capable of operating quickly in an environment that changes on a daily basis.
