Coronation Street favourite Summer Spellman has been arrested for murder which could potentially lead to Harriet Bibby leaving the ITV soap after six years on screen20:47, 21 May 2026Summer Spellman has been arrested for the murder of Theo Silverton on Coronation Street. The university student, who is played by Harriet Bibby, has been at the centre of the ITV soap's latest whodunnit and was unveiled as one of the suspects after the evil scaffolder was killed off during a much-hyped Murder Week.‌Theo, who was played by former Tracy Beaker star James Cartwright, abused his partner Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) for almost a year before he was found dead, and both he and Summer, along with Christina Boyd, George Shuttleworth, Gary Windass, and Danielle Silverton are all suspects. Not long before the murder, Summer became aware that Theo had been abusing Todd and he was also responsible for the death of her adoptive dad Billy.‌But on Thursday's instalment of the world's longest-running TV soap, George, who is also aware of Summer's diary which contains writing that could act as evidence, went to DS Lisa Swain to tell her that he had seen Summer heading towards Theo's flat on the night of murder, which is not what she had told police initially. Summer had been due to head to America and was packing her bags when Swain, who has a habit of putting innocent people in prison, swooped onto the scene and drove her away in a police car.‌READ MORE: Coronation Street Idris' link to another character confirmed - but it's not AlyaREAD MORE: Coronation Street star Paddy Bever 'not scared at all' as he announces new roleShe said: "Step away from the car, please. A witness has come forward placing you at the scene of Theo Silverton's murder. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't mention when questioned something you rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence." Todd, still unaware that George was the one who told the police about Summer, was left wondering who would do such a thing.Reacting to the shock arrest, one fan wrote on X: "WTF is wrang wi George?! He disnae want tae git Summer intae bother, but he runs tae the polis tae clype on her, based on a private diary he'd nae business readin(?!) Whit a c***!" Another said: "Personally, I'm glad this got said today. It was harsh, but you can see why a part of Summer would blame Todd for keeping silent about Theo's violent behaviour, and she is still grieving for Billy. It's cleared the air now, and she did apologise."‌Could all this mean that Summer is about to leave the show for good? Actress Harriet Bibby, who took over the role of Summer from Matilda Freeman in 2020, has recently stepped away from the cobbles to star a one-woman play and recently teased that her alter-ego could be guilty after all.Speaking about the storyline, she said: "She's such an unexpected suspect in this, but it’s also completely understandable why she's a suspect, and so she should be."‌Harriet, who previously appeared in episodes of Doctors and Brassic before joining Coronation Street, even believed that, within the context of the story, it could easily have been Summer who ended up dead at the hands of Theo. She said: "I think there's a scenario where she might have felt like it was either her that was going to be hurt, or maybe even killed, or it was him."I think when people are pushed to that point, it’s interesting to see what they will do to survive. It's no secret that Theo was very threatening, he even said that he was going to bury Summer if she got in his way, so there could have been a moment where she felt like it was either her or him.
