This week in the 'All Points North on Video' studio we discuss how to embrace, accept or cope with the idiosyncrasies of daily life in Finland. All Points North on Video - Embracing Finland's cultural norms, quirks and shocksRonan Browne21.5. 16:32If you believe the stereotypes, Finnish culture is built around love for three things: ice hockey, sauna, and silence. The reality is, of course, far more complex — as many people who move to the 'happiest country in the world' tend to discover not long after arrival.Finnish culture can instead be a confusing labyrinth of distant but direct communication styles, of low-threshold acquaintanceships but high-bar friendships, and of unintentional personal space violations. But for content creator Dave Cad, the norms and the oddities of Finnish culture have provided a canvas for his comedy clips — which he began to share on social media not long after this first visit to the country over a decade ago.His ode to the astiankuivauskaappi, or dish drying cabinet, for example, has racked up millions of views and likes across his social media platforms."I think you also connect with people that are in similar situations," he tells the APN podcast. "So we can end up feeling not so lonely in this weird situation that we're in, of trying to integrate into the culture."Sharing is caringHannah Lewis, an Australian who moved to Helsinki after falling in love with Finland on her honeymoon visit, has also garnered a sizeable following on social media by sharing her day-to-day experiences. She tells APN that while she recognises the challenges many people face adjusting and adapting to life in Finland, she likes to share the positive aspects too."I still talk about some of the hardships and the things I struggle with, but overall, I love living here, so I think Finns like to hear that," she says. You can watch the full episode from the video at the top of the page or on our YouTube channel.Tell us what you think!Ronan Browne produced and presented this episode of All Points North.
