President of the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) Gerard Gordon said that “it is deeply concerned by the recent incident at Teteron Barracks in which an officer was allegedly threatened by an inmate.”“We wish to make it absolutely clear that threats against prison officers must never be treated lightly. Our officers continue to perform their duties under extremely challenging and often dangerous conditions while maintaining order, security, and public safety within the nation’s correctional system,” Gordon said.He said the incident serves as another reminder that prison officers face real risks on the job every day.“The Association stands firmly behind the affected officer and all officers across the service who continue to carry out their responsibilities professionally despite the many hazards associated with the profession, and we are calling for all necessary measures to be taken to ensure the safety and protection of officers and for matters of this nature to be addressed swiftly and seriously,” he said.Gordon’s comments came in response to a prison officer attached to the Tetron Holding Facility reporting to police that an inmate threatened to kill him during one of his tours of duty at the facility in Chaguaramas.Police said the 34-year-old officer, of Princes Town, made the report at the Carenage Police Station at about 11.08 a.m. on Sunday.According to reports, the officer was distributing meals and conducting a medicine parade at the facility at about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday when an inmate allegedly threatened to kill him upon his release from prison. The accused, police said, is a 46-year-old man who has been in custody since 2017.He and another individual had been charged with the murder of a man in Guyaguayare in 2014.The officer reported the matter to his senior officer and was advised accordingly before making the police report.W/Cpl De Gazon is continuing enquiries.
