BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay admitted "we'd be fired by now" after a long segment on an achievement for his programme as he apologised to listeners for "wanging on"11:23, 21 May 2026Presenter Vernon Kay issued an apology to BBC Radio 2 listeners after admitting a transgression that would have seen him "fired" at some radio stations.Vernon's Radio 2 show is among the nominees for a prestigious radio award for their coverage of the Oasis Homecoming Concert last summer. The DJ went backstage at their first gig in Heaton Park, their first concert in hometown Manchester for 16 years. The show is nominated for the ARIAS, and their competition includes Sky News's coverage of Donald Trump's State Visit, The King's Trust Carol Concert on Magic Classical and Live Aid Relived on Greatest Hits Radio. After a speech lasting around three minutes detailing how much he and his team had put into the Oasis Homecoming Concert coverage, Vernon admits he would have been "fired" by a commercial radio station for the hold-up.He wished the show "good luck" as he praised his team, adding: "You deserve a little pat on the back."Vernon continued: "Let me just step down off this box. That was quite a moment wasn't it? You know if we were on commercial radio we'd be fired by now."He then put on a mock voice suggesting he was imitating a would be radio executive: "'That link was 30 seconds. You did three minutes. If you'd like to collect your P45 on the way out that would be fine, that would be great.' Oh move on."Yes I know I've been wanging on, I apologise. I promise I'll play loads of great tracks back to back."Vernon began the segment by revealing how much "joy" he had experienced being involved in the iconic Oasis Homecoming Concert in Manchester. In the build-up to the gig, Vernon went backstage with some special guests as he met some people who witnessed the Oasis phenomenon first-hand.Recalling the events of last summer, Vernon said: "Grown men were weeping. It's embarrassing. We actually went into the Manchester city centre after we did the show, myself, my brother, my mate Brendan, and we said, shall we nip into boots and get some factor 30?"In the 90s, it was like, are we ready to go, who's got the beers? We had a brilliant, brilliant summer, and so did the majority of the nation, just soaking up that wave of joy. It was joy, it really was. Everyone remembering the 90s."A Disney-produced documentary on the Oasis reunion tour is set to be released in cinemas in September.Vernon added: "And the documentary which is released on Disney, the Oasis tour, is something really special.Article continues below"Apparently, I heard that Noel and Liam are not going to see it until it's actually finished. Some people have seen rough edits. No, no, no, you're going to see for the first time what people are going to see."
