The debate for the top forward in the 2026 NHL Draft has mostly narrowed to two players: Penn State’s Gavin McKenna and Frölunda’s Ivar Stenberg. While there are some scouts who favor Brantford center Caleb Malhotra, today we’re going to focus on the contrast between the two wingers. Both are late-2007, 5-foot-11 wingers with elite scoring track records. They project as massive point producers in the NHL. For teams picking at the top of the draft, the decision comes down to the margins between pure skill and pro translation. The case for Gavin McKennaMcKenna is the most purely skilled player in the draft. His resume is elite. After posting 129 points in 56 WHL games and being the best player in the CHL a season ago, he won the Big Ten regular-season scoring title and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker as a draft-eligible freshman at Penn State. He also notched 14 points for Canada at the World Juniors. He dominates his peers.McKenna is a dynamic, pass-first winger who processes the game at an elite level. His puck skills and hockey sense are special. His pure straight-line skating is good, not great, but his hands and vision allow him to generate offense with pace. He’s an offensive engine who projects to run a power play, drawing comparisons from scouts to players like Artemi Panarin, or, if you’re a major believer, Mitch Marner or Patrick Kane. The concern is the physicality, or lack thereof, in his game. McKenna’s compete level is average. He isn’t overly physical and plays too much on the perimeter, often relying on being cute and making flashy plays instead of taking pucks to the high-percentage areas. The case for Ivar StenbergStenberg’s draft year has been equally impressive. Playing in the SHL against men, Stenberg posted 33 points in 43 games for Frölunda. That’s a better draft-year SHL season than William Eklund, Leo Carlsson or Nicklas Backstrom. He was also a critical player for Sweden as they won gold at the World Juniors. He was arguably better than McKenna at the World Juniors, especially in the important games, and was clearly better than him 16 months prior at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky, the only two times they have been on the ice together.
