Sexually transmitted infections are surging across Europe, with rates of syphilis and gonorrhea reaching record levels in 2024, according to the latest figures published Thursday.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported more than 106,000 gonorrhea cases in Europe in 2024, rising 4.3 percent from the previous year and over 300 percent since 2014. This was the highest recorded rate since the agency began monitoring STIs in 2009.

Numbers are not looking better for other infections. Close to 46,000 syphilis cases were reported in 2024, an 8 percent increase from 2023 and more than double the rate of 2015.
