Mark and his wife Setho, who were injured in a fire in their rental home, believed to have been caused by a chimney explosion.

A Cape Town family has been left devastated after a fire tore through their rental home this week, leaving an eight-year-old boy severely burned and his father critically injured in hospital.

The fire, believed to have been triggered by a chimney explosion, destroyed the home within minutes, leaving the family with no belongings and no place to return to.

Eight-year-old Keglu sustained severe burns to his face and legs and is being treated at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, which this year marks 70 years of providing specialist paediatric care for children in South Africa.

His father, 55-year-old Mark, remains in intensive care at Tygerberg Hospital, where doctors have given him a 20% chance of survival. Mark’s wife, Setho, was also injured in the fire.
