Dublin wants to follow fellow farming powerhouse New Zealand in changing the way methane pollution from its many cows is factored into climate policy, a move scientists warn could exacerbate global warming.

Ruminants produce a lot of methane through digestion, and belch large volumes into the atmosphere. Together with Ireland’s 5 million sheep, livestock account for an estimated 22% of the country’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

Known worldwide for its butter, cheese and steaks, the republic has long been reluctant to agree to climate goals it fears would force it to downsize its prized livestock sector.
