Police are still trying to determine how the body of an infant came to be left beside a rural road near Blenheim, with officers expressing concern for the infant’s mother and wider family.
The infant was discovered by a machinery operator on Wairau Bar Rd shortly before 1.30pm on Tuesday, prompting a police response and the closure of the road for several hours.

Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham said police were “extremely concerned” for the welfare of the infant’s mother and relatives.
“Police would like to speak with them as soon as possible to ensure they receive the support that they require at this time,” Feltham said on Wednesday.
