A machinery operator discovered the body of an infant on the side of a road in Blenheim on Tuesday.
The discovery was made on Wairau Bar Road just before 1.30pm, police said.
Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham said on Wednesday police were extremely concerned for the welfare of the infant's mother and wider family.
“Police would like to speak with them as soon as possible to ensure they receive the support that they require at this time,” Feltham said.
